This article aims\nto inform you, the consumer, of some of the ways these illegal\nactivities are carried out.<br><br>\nMoney laundering involves taking illicit proceeds and\ndisguising their illicit source in anticipation of ultimately using\nthe criminal proceeds to perform legal and illegal activities.\nSimply put, money laundering is the process of making dirty\nmoney look clean.\nThe list of possible examples of money laundering is nonexhaustive\nand changes over time.<br><br>\nThe following are examples\nof such techniques or methods:<\/div><!-- .section-description --><\/div><!-- .section-title-wrapper -->\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef81214 elementor-widget elementor-widget-egovenziconlist\" data-id=\"ef81214\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"egovenziconlist.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"icon-list-wrapper\"><ul class=\"nav flex-column vertical-icon-list\"><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Smurfing: making a multitude of payments in different periods of time and through different banks. This will have the effect that a single money transaction is divided into several smaller transactions in order to circumvent the bank monitoring system, which aims to identify all those operations that exceed a certain threshold value.<\/li><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Gambling: In most cases criminal organizations clean up their money using gambling houses and casinos. They buy gambling chips in large quantities in order to play, but use only a small part of them or don\u2019t use them at all. The purpose of these operations is to convert the chips into money and simultaneously be issued by the gambling house a document that certifies the win.<\/li><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Backing of financial loans i.e. giving a loan to oneself: In this method a member of a criminal organization deposits dirty money into a bank account in a \u201cfinancial haven\u201d, also known as a jurisdiction known to have few restrictions on legitimate business-activities and requiring little or no income tax.<\/li><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Fictitious transactions in properties: this method involves the sale of property at a price higher than its market value.<\/li><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Shell company: also known as a company which serves as a vehicle for business transactions without itself having any significant assets or operations.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><!-- .icon-list-wrapper -->\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e3d58bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-egovenzsectiontitle\" data-id=\"e3d58bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"egovenzsectiontitle.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"section-title-wrapper border-light text-left\"><div class=\"title-wrap\"><h3 class=\"section-title\"><\/h3><\/div><!-- .title-wrap --><div class=\"section-description\"><br><br><\/div><!-- .section-description --><\/div><!-- .section-title-wrapper -->\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba9dbd7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-egovenzsectiontitle\" data-id=\"ba9dbd7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"egovenzsectiontitle.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"section-title-wrapper border-light text-left\"><div class=\"title-wrap\"><h3 class=\"section-title\">Terrorist Financing Techniques<\/h3><span class=\"title-separator separator-border theme-color-bg\"><\/span><\/div><!-- .title-wrap --><div class=\"section-description\">Terrorism financing refers to activities that provides financing\nor financial support to individual terrorists or terrorist groups.\nThe sums needed to mount terrorist attacks are not always\nlarge, and the associated transactions are not necessarily\ncomplex.\nThere are two primary sources of financing for terrorist\nactivities. The first involves financial support from countries,\norganizations or individuals which may come from legitimate\nsources while the other involves a wide variety of revenuegenerating\nactivities, some illicit, including smuggling and\nfraud.\nA new phenomenon in terrorist financing has been the\nemergence of Foreign Terrorist Fighters (\u201cFTFs\u201d), these are as\na result of the increasing efforts by terrorist groups working to\nradicalize individual\u2019s often young people and inciting them to\nleave their homes to become foreign terrorist fighters.\nThese FTFs are largely self-funded and have revolutionized\nterrorist financing.<\/div><!-- .section-description --><\/div><!-- .section-title-wrapper -->\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c59fedf elementor-widget elementor-widget-egovenzsectiontitle\" data-id=\"c59fedf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"egovenzsectiontitle.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"section-title-wrapper border-light text-left\"><div class=\"title-wrap\"><h3 class=\"section-title\"><\/h3><span class=\"title-separator separator-border theme-color-bg\"><\/span><\/div><!-- .title-wrap --><div class=\"section-description\">The following are other examples of terrorist\nfinancing methods and techniques:<\/div><!-- .section-description --><\/div><!-- .section-title-wrapper -->\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a327cb6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-egovenziconlist\" data-id=\"a327cb6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"egovenziconlist.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"icon-list-wrapper\"><ul class=\"nav flex-column vertical-icon-list\"><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Private donations: direct financial support can come from individuals to terrorist networks. There is also a movement for newer terrorist organisations to look for different small scale sources by using fundraising through social media. Also, wealthy private donors can be an important source of income for some terrorist groups.<\/li><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Abuse and misuse of non-profit organisations: Terrorist entities target may target some non\u2013profit organisations (NPOs) such as charities and religious institutions to access materials and funds from these NPOs and to exploit their networks.<\/li><li class=\"icon-parent\"><span class=\" icon-theme-color ti-minus\"><\/span>Proceeds of criminal activity: terrorist organisations will engage in a variety of illegal activities to generate funds.
